Mukesh Parpiani, known for his candid eye and storytelling pictures,
has been wedded to the cause of photojournalism for over three decades. He has covered
a wide range of genres and themes. He invested his most vigorous years – a decade
to each of three major media houses – The Daily, The Indian Express, and Mid-Day.
He is particularly remembered for his coverage of the Mumbai Police and the 1992
communal riots. Though he started photography as a hobby, he completed several advanced
courses in photography with Dr. (Prof.) PKM Pillai and went on to earn a Diploma
in Photojournalism. He also completed a number courses in mass communication from
the famous Xaviers Institute of Communication. He now has seven photo exhibitions
to his credit and has contributed to various national and international magazines.
Prominent among them are his contributions to The Black Book, The Illustrated Weekly
of India, Better Photography and a Coffee Table Book on Mumbai Police.
In the year 2000, he launched the first ever photo CD in India named Bombay to Mumbai
that portrays the change in the city through six hundred pictures. Throughout his
career, he has trained over fifty photo journalists that are now part of national
and international media houses. Parpiani is now associated with the NCPA as the
head of the Piramal Gallery and has organised forty successful exhibitions with
a major thrust towards contemporary work. The Piramal Gallery, is the only fully
equipped art gallery in India dedicated to photography as an art form. Parpiani
and his team also cover all events and happenings at NCPA through their lens.
A true Mumbaikar, now a resident of the city for almost half a decade, he continues
to shoot Mumbai, potraying the changing nature of the city in the new millenium.
His major thrust these days is on helping people focus on photography as an art-form;
sponsoring sound coaching programs for youngsters, aspiring hobbyists and budding
professionals; and on providing a platform for sincere aspirants to showcase their
work through the gallery at NCPA.
